Understanding Poker Limit Variations

There are a lot of different poker games out there. To get even more confusing, there are a lot of different limit variations for each of those poker games. At first all of these different variations can be very confusing and overwhelming. Just hang in there and you will get it with time and experience. There are basically three different limit variations that can be played in any of the poker games. There is Fixed Limit Poker, No Limit Poker and Pot Limit Poker. These different variations can be used for all of the different games.

Fixed Limit Poker

Fixed limit poker is a variation that is pretty simple to understand. As the name suggests, there is a fixed limit that can be bet in the poker game. The limit is decided before the game is played and it stays the same. An example of a fixed limit poker game would be $10/$20 Texas Holdem. Everything about the game is the same as any other Texas Holdem game. The only difference is within the betting structure. For the first two rounds of betting you can only bet in increments of $10, and you cannot bet anymore than $10 (or less). In the last two rounds you must bet in increments of $20 and $20 only.

Pot Limit Poker

Pot Limit is similar to Fixed Limit in the aspect that they both put limits on what can be bet. The big difference is that Pot Limit poker does not have a fixed limit. The limit will depend on the size of the pot (hence the pot limit name). You are limited to the amount of money in the pot. You cannot bet anything more than the size of the pot, however you can bet less. This is still a fairly flexible game when it comes to the betting structure. If there is a lot of action, the pot can get to the point to where the game is nearly a no limit game at times.

No Limit Poker

This is the mother of all poker limit variations. It must be because there is no limit. In this game you can bet your entire stack at any point in the game. This can be a very stressful betting structure. In the matter of just one hand you can go completely broke or be sitting very nicely with a huge stack in front of you. The swings in a No Limit game are like nothing else you will ever experience. Most are familiar with the no limit variation, because of No Limit Texas Holdem, which is the most popular poker game in the world.

Once you get the hang of it, this is a pretty simple concept. The only thing that changes from one variation to another is the betting structure. Everything else is the same.
